Water. Water will make up approximately a quarter of healthy soil. Water, like air, is retained between soil particles in the pore spaces. Rain and irrigation water can flow down to the root zone and subsoil through large pore spaces. In sandy soils, the gaps between the soil particles are so wide that water drains down and out relatively fast due to gravity. It's for this reason why sandy soils dry out so quickly.

Water can move back up by capillary action because of the small pore spaces. Water has filled the pore spaces of waterlogged soils, pushing all of the air out. Plant roots and soil organisms are both suffocated as a result of this.
